In February 2009, EDF completed its acquisition of British Energy and reached an agreement with Centrica in May 2009 for sharing the generation output.  This acquisition gives EDF a generation market share in excess of 20%.  The successful completion of this purchase means that EDF owns the majority of the nuclear assets in the UK.  As part of the acquisition, to satisfy EU competition law, EDF was obliged to divest the coal station at Eggborough.

In addition to the British Energy fleet of nuclear stations, EDF owns 4GW of coal capacity at Cottam and West Burton. It has installed Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) at both coal plants, which enables these coal stations to maintain high load factors under the revised Large Combustion Plants Directive which came into operation in 2008.  In 2012, it sold a CCGT asset, Sutton Bridge, to a Macquarie led group of investors. EDF has also recently developed an additional 1200MW CCGT at West Burton, which was commissioned in 2013.

However, a final investment decision has not been made on any of them.

In October 2013, the UK government and EDF reached an agreement on a Contract for Difference strike price of £92.50/MWh for the electricity that will be produced from Hinkley Point C. The agreement of the strike price is a major milestone on the way to a Final Investment Decision, as is the approval of the main terms of agreement between EDF and UK government by the European Commission under State Aid rules in October 2014.
