Aristotle once said, “Whosoever is delighted in solitude is either a wild beast or a god.” This proposition implies that those who hold solitude dear may embody two distinct extremes. On one hand, they may adopt qualities reminiscent of fierce beasts, and on the other hand, they may become as transcendent as gods.
Likening individuals who are delighted in solitude to wild beasts accentuates their innate primal and untamed essence during moments of isolation. This phenomenon arises from the absence of social restraints and external influences in solitude, thereby facilitating a more transparent revelation of their authentic selves. Comparable to beasts, they may exhibit behaviors characterized by freedom, autonomy, and unrestrained conduct, thus inclining towards the pursuit of desires and the actualization of self, unrestricted by external constraints.
Conversely, likening individuals who cherish solitude to gods suggests their proclivity towards solitary contemplation, introspection, and exploration of their inner realms. They may seek solace in the natural environment, savoring solitary instances and deriving inspiration and wisdom therein. This trait of contemplation and detachment from societal norms aligns them with the divine, as deities are often perceived as entities transcending the mundane, distanced from ordinary human affairs and social engagements.
The theme of this exhibition resonates with the artistic motif of LIU. Through his works, he portrays individuals who diverge from the banality of crowds, wandering amidst nature in solitary contemplation. They operate under the influence of a transcendent life force, accompanied by the beasts of the wilderness, bathed in mystical and fantastical illumination. These visual depictions can be interpreted as tangible representations of Aristotle’s renowned aphorism.
